New Puppy Checklist: Essentials for a Smooth Start

New Puppy Checklist: Essentials for a Smooth Start

So you’re thinking of adopting a new puppy?

First of all – congratulations! Deciding to adopt a brand new member of the family is a great decision, and once you have found the right fit, the two of you are sure to enjoy a fantastic bond that will last for many years to come.

Dogs are lifelong, loyal companions, and will easily make friends with the whole family!

But once you have started the adoption process and are well on your way towards adopting a new pet, the next step is to start making a checklist of all the things that you need to get for your furry friend.

From bowls to toys to dog tags for pets, we have got you covered so you won’t forget a thing!

  • Puppy food. Depending on the age of the puppy you are adopting, it is important to pick food that is appropriate for their specific age bracket. Make sure that you choose a diet which is tailored to younger dogs and puppies. Most major dog food retailers make a puppy specific version of their regular dog food, so check the labels or ask a member of staff in the store to ensure you pick the right one.
  • Treats. Ideal for training and rewarding your new puppy for good behaviour, treats are definitely a necessity. Again, go for puppy-specific products. We recommend sticking to smaller, bite-size treats that are easy to digest.
  • A bed. Puppies sleep for an average of 18-19 hours every day, meaning that a good quality, comfortable bed is absolutely essential. Soft, cushioned beds are better as puppies like to chew things, and chewing on hard plastic beds can potentially be dangerous for them.
  • Dog tags for pets. Dog ID tags are another essential, not least because it is actually illegal for dogs to be out in public spaces without them. We have a wide range of high-quality dog tags for pets available, in a range of different sizes and styles. Browse our collection and pick out the perfect tag for your new puppy.
  • Collar and lead. Now that you’ve got your new puppy tag, you need a smart new collar to attach it to! We recommend an adjustable puppy collar as it allows for freedom of movement and will enable your puppy to grow into it as they develop. A lead is also necessary when you start taking your puppy out for walks. Depending on the breed of dog, a puppy harness could also be useful.
  • Toys. Puppies are like children – they love to play before anything else! Get a good range of toys for your new puppy to play with. Ones that pique their curiosity and encourage them to develop new skills are useful. If you choose to get them the classic ball as a toy, make sure it is big enough to avoid becoming a potential choking hazard.
  • Healthcare. When they are old enough, your puppy will need a trip to the vet for their puppy vaccinations and boosters. However, you should also make sure to regularly worm your puppy and treat them for fleas, when they are old enough. Puppy teething gel can also be a good investment for younger dogs, as it will help to relieve pain for teething puppies.
