Top Tips for Cat Owners

cat
Cats and kittens are some of the most joyful pets one can have but they do come with a lot of responsibility - so it is important to do your research beforehand and adapt your home to your feline friend as much as possible. Keep reading to find out our top tips for cat owners, old and new.

Moving Home?
When moving house, it is important to ensure that your cat is the last thing you move. This is because cats become very accustomed to the places they are familiar with. By moving your pet over to your new home last (but not least!), it gives you time to ensure you have a quiet space filled with a few familiar items for your cat to feel right at home with.
Introduce your cat to your home one room at a time, with the first few days in one room where possible - so your cat can get used to their new place of residence. After a few days, you can start introducing your cat to other areas of the home. It is important to make sure your cat has time to get to know their new home and feel comfortable there before letting them out and about. Perhaps introduce them to their new surroundings slowly with a harness. Of course, it goes without saying that a collar with cat tags containing your details should help reunite you with your pet if they do go exploring. Remember to ensure your tags have up to date information!
Anxious Cats
Many cats can be extremely anxious, especially around unfamiliar people, so ensure you keep a few toys and treats handy to distract them when visitors arrive. Catnip has been known to help mellow cats out, which can sometimes help to reduce anxious behaviour, too, so why not give it a go?
Scratching Issues
If you are fed up of your cat scratching your sofas and other furniture, invest in a scratching post of their own. Each time they go for your sofas, take them to the scratching post. Another popular method is to spray your furniture with a deterrent spray. There are many scents that cats choose to avoid, which should help stop them from using your furniture from sharpening their claws!
Overweight?
If you feel your cat is putting on a little weight, then you may want to reduce the amount of food you are giving them. Cats are natural grazers and don’t need huge meals - they like to eat little and often - so try switching between dry and wet food to see what works best for your feline friend. It is also important to keep them active; buy some toys and play with them to ensure they are getting enough exercise every day to keep them healthy
Leaving the House?
If you decide to make the move from a house cat to one that gets the explore the great outdoors, make sure your cat is fully prepared. Flea and worming treatments should be up to date, as well as vaccinations to keep them safe should they come across any cats that may be carrying illnesses. Make use of a collar with a cat tag attached. Should anything happen while your cat is out of the house, anyone who finds your furry friend will know exactly how to reach you.
Regular Health Checks
Humans go to the doctors when they are feeling unwell, but our feline counterparts are unable to let us know if there is something wrong so it is also important to ensure you take your cat to the vets regularly. Spaying or neutering is important, as well as yearly vaccinations and booster jabs to keep them happy and healthy.
It isn’t always easy caring for a pet; it requires time, patience and devotion to ensure your pet stays happy and healthy – a lengthy commitment but a highly rewarding one all the same.
