With the recent influx of hot weather, many of us are escaping the soaring temperatures and heading to the beach for a fun-filled break with the family. And, for those of us with pooches of our own, this often includes our four-legged family members, too!

However, the beach can be a daunting environment for pets – especially if this will be their first trip to the seaside. With that in mind, there are certain steps you can take to keep your pet as safe as possible. From dog name tags in case of running off to keeping cool in the heat, make sure that your summer day out is enjoyable and fun-filled for everyone!

Check Before You Travel

Forward-planning is an essential part of any trip, but when your pooch is coming along for the ride, it’s more important than ever. If you have a particular beach in mind or are intending to visit a certain part of the coast, make sure to do your homework beforehand and ascertain whether your chosen beach is dog-friendly. Not only will this give you plenty of time to find alternatives if pets are not allowed, but it will also ensure you don’t end up disappointed on the day.

Packing

Another part of the process of planning ahead, you should make sure that you have everything you need for your trip packed and ready to go. Try to pack as much as you can in advance, so you can just get up and go on the day! Aside from your personal effects and items for the family, it’s important to pack everything your dog could need while you are away. A lead, cosy blanket for the journey and a water bowl or pet-friendly travel bottle are a must, but why not also pack a few balls or their favourite toys for a fun-filled game on the beach?

Safety

The beach may be an unfamiliar environment for your dog, so if this is the case, it’s essential that you are prepared. The coast can bring a whole new host of scents, sights and sounds for your dog to experience, which could be overwhelming. Always pay attention to your pet’s mood and behaviour - if you notice any signs of distress, you should remove them from the stressful situation at once and try to make them as comfortable as possible. In addition, it’s important that your pet’s collar and dog name tags are in good condition and contain up-to-date information. If not, it might be the perfect time to consider updating your pooch’s tag!

Shade

When the sun is beating down, it’s important to remember that dogs can easily overheat in warm weather. If there are no shady spots around the beach, bring a pop-up tent or beach umbrella to create your own shady spot for your dog to relax in. Put their favourite blanket or a cosy beach rug in the shade and provide a fresh bowl of cool water for them to enjoy.
