Lost? Here’s What to Do to Find Your Missing Cat Quickly

When your cat goes missing it can be an extremely stressful time.  Petlog gives great advice on what to do if you're unfortunately enough to be in this position.

Here are some really useful tips:

  • Register your cat with CatAware and they will immediately alert your local community to look out for your cat.  What a great idea.
  • Contact Petlog's customer care team to update their database that your cat is missing.  This way, when someone finds your cat and contacts them, you can be reunited much more quickly.  Petlog's 24/7 line is 0844 4633 999.  Hopefully you have 'Microchipped' or 'Scan me' engraved on your cat's ID tag to alert the finder to have your cat scanned at the local vet.  This has also proved to deter thieves.
  • Check with your neighbours to make sure your kitty isn't out visiting them or lurking in their garden somewhere, and check anywhere your cat may have been locked in by accident.  Speak to locals, shopkeepers, postmen, etc.
  • Use social media by posting on Pet-Tags' facebook page.
  • Create posters and notices for local distribution.
  • Contact your local vets, your local Rehoming Centre and your local Animal Warden.

The sooner you get starter the better!  Keep your mobile on you so you can be contacted easily if someone finds your cat.

Although it is not a legal requirement for your cat to wear identification, an ID tag will make it so much easier for the person who finds your cat to contact you.  Include your mobile phone number and the word 'Microchipped' which does increase the chances of your cat being returned and deters thieves.

Steps to Take If Your Cat Goes Missing

1. Start Searching Immediately
Begin by checking nearby gardens, sheds, garages, and under decks. Most cats stay close to home, especially in the first 24 hours.

2. Call Their Name Calmly
Walk around your neighbourhood calling their name in a soft voice, particularly at dawn or dusk when it’s quieter.

3. Shake a Familiar Sound
Use treats, kibble, or a food bowl to create a sound your cat recognises. This can draw them out if they’re hiding nearby.

4. Leave Out Familiar Scents
Place your cat’s blanket, bedding, or an item of your clothing outside to help them find their way back by scent.

5. Ask Neighbours for Help
Drop leaflets or knock on doors asking people to check their sheds and garages. Many cats accidentally get shut inside.

6. Notify Local Vets and Shelters
Provide a description and recent photo. If your cat is microchipped, alert the microchip database immediately.

7. Post Online and in the Community
Use local lost pet groups, community boards, and social media to spread the word. Include a photo, last seen location, and contact details.

8. Keep Checking Back
Return to spots you've already searched, especially at night. Cats can hide for long periods and move when it’s quiet.

Final Thought

Cats are clever and resilient, and many return home within a few days. By acting quickly, staying visible in the community, and remaining calm, you’ll give yourself the best chance of a happy reunion.
