As the weather is getting warmer and thoughts of holidays are on the horizon, it’s clear that summer is finally here once again. However, while we may be sheltering from the sun and taking steps to keep ourselves safe this summer, are we doing the same for our pets?

Pets can be just as vulnerable to the effects of sun and heat as we can be, so it is important to keep your furry friends safe and well this summer. From dog tags to keep your pooch safe on those long summer walks to keeping plenty of fresh water on hand to help them stay cool, there are plenty of things that you can do to help them out over the warmer months.
Safety and Security
Although it is a legal requirement to wear dog tags at all times when in a public place, there are certain additional steps you can take to keep your pet safe on walks. If you are in an unfamiliar area, it’s best to keep your pet on a lead and close to you. That way, there should be less chance of your dog running off and getting lost, or getting stolen.
Car Journeys
Whether it is a trip to the park, a fun-filled day out or a summer adventure, it can be fun to take our pets out and about when the weather is nice. However, it is essential that you never leave your pet in a hot car. When the car is in motion, if there is no air-conditioning, leave the window open a crack to allow fresh air to circulate and once you arrive at your destination, make sure to bring your furry friend along with you.
Heat and Shade
Pets can easily overheat during warm weather, so it’s important to keep them safe, cool and comfortable when the temperature rises. Make sure that plenty of fresh water is always available and allow them access to a shady space to rest – whether it is indoors or a shaded outdoor area. Similarly, longer-haired pets may benefit from a trip to the groomer to shed some excess fur. In addition, you should be mindful of hot surfaces such as pavements and sand which can damage your pet’s delicate paws on particularly hot days and cause them pain.
Summer Event Safety
Barbecues are a popular summer activity – if you are planning to host a BBQ this summer, make sure that you keep your pets well away from the barbecue. Similarly, some people like to host garden parties over the summer, which can include loud music, crowds of people and fireworks. If you are planning a party, make sure to provide your pet with a safe space to retire to should the noise get too overwhelming, and keep young children away from them in case your pet becomes agitated.
