Welcoming Your New Best Friend

Much like learning something new every day, there’s always something new to learn about dogs too. Most dog owners never get bored as they love spending time with their pooches - and are a lot happier for it, too.

But before adopting your soon to be loyal best friend, there are a few things you will need to remember.
  • Ensure that your new canine is neutered or spayed. Dogs that have been through the “fix” have fewer urges to leave home, which means the chance of them running away, getting lost or being involved in an accident is reduced
  • The above process also reduces the risk of your dog falling ill with cancer
  • Make sure you always include a daily walk (or two!) for your dog into your routine; adopting a dog is a commitment, and you will need to ensure you are exercising your companion daily. Invest in an engraved dog tag and don’t forget to play along and introduce new games to keep your dog happy and stimulated
  • Growing pups will start to gnaw at things as they teethe; buying them a chew toy is a better alternative than your furniture
  • Make sure you book your dog in for annual check-ups with the vets; dogs cannot communicate their pain to humans, and there are unable to notify you of any underlying discomfort(s) they may have
  • Along with this, it is always good to have an insurance policy in place for your pets; this can be extremely beneficial as both vet and medical fees can be substantial should your dog ever become poorly or need treatment
  • Although dogs can be left on their own for certain amounts of time, never leave them alone with young children. Even the gentlest and least-violent dog can become fierce and aggressive when startled or provoked
  • Always keep fresh water on hand for your dog as they can become dehydrated very quickly
  • Make an effort to groom your pet to ensure it can relax and stay content, not only does this reduce shedding and encourage a natural, shiny and healthy coat, but it will make your dog feel good too
  • Ensure you have the correct supplies for your dog, such as a dog collar with personalised name tag, a leash, a food and water bowl, comfy bed, and plenty of toys to keep them entertained
  • Finally, if you're getting a young puppy, you also get the chance to choose the perfect name for your new pet!
Along with these handy tips, before buying a dog, it is also important to remember to dog-proof your home and ensure there is nothing harmful or dangerous within reach. Adopting a dog is a lifelong commitment and responsibility, the same as it would be for a child.
